The calculator makes some assumptions, every garden setup is different and so are the skills of the growers. You may attain this or even higher improvement or you may not, here are some variables to consider:
1 – Initial PPFD of HPS setup – usually not much more than 900 micromoles, which leaves a good amount of headroom for improvement. If your setup is already at 1200-1400 micromoles then you will probably not benefit all that much with higher yields, in that case perhaps the electricity savings would serve you better.
2 – With increasing light intensity you must be able to supply enough carbon via CO2 and enough additional heat so those other factors aren’t limiting your plant’s photosynthetic rate.
3 – If you are already doing 1 and 2 to the optimal levels then again, you will likely not see much improvement in yield. If the opposite is true, then you would be a perfect candidate to see the most improvement. Or perhaps a hybrid setup would be ideal in your particular situation.
4 – Some species/strains perform better under an HPS like spectrum, while other do better with a spectrum like our Yield Max spectrum, with more blue and deep red spectral distribution of total light energy.
5 – Some species/strains tolerate and even thrive under high intensity lighting, while others tend to be more sensitive and easily bleached/burned. So what you grow may or may not like the changes.
6 – Grower skills, plant variety/strain, pest pressure, diseases, etc all would play a role here as well. The calculator doesn’t know you or your setup or any of the above mentioned factors so your results may and probably will vary.
Takeaway: Don’t just trust calculators and/or company marketing, even ours – do your research. Setup your own side by side test/trial grows for at least a cycle or two. THEN proceed based on your own proven results, nothing is better than your own proven results. Nothing!
